The Thirteen Powers

Energy and Application

with Sam Masich

A four-day deep dive into the core of taijiquan. This is the first time in Canada that Sam will present the Masich Internal Arts Method 'Taiji Eight Barehand Energies' form that features the relationship between the eight-trigrams—‘heaven’ (qian 乾; ☰), ‘earth’ (kun 坤; ☷), ‘water’ (kan 坎; ☵), ‘fire’ (li 离; ☲), ‘wind’ (xun 巽; ☴), ‘thunder’ (zhen 震; ☳), ‘lake’ (dui 兑; ☱), and ‘mountain’ (gen 艮; ☶)—and the eight energies: ‘ward’ (peng 掤), ‘roll’ ( 履), ‘squeeze’ (ji 擠), ‘press’ (an 按), ‘pluck’ (cai 採), ‘rend’ (lie 挒), ‘elbow’ (zhou 肘), and ‘lean’ (kao 靠).

Understood in the context of the ‘five stance-phases’—‘advance step’ (jinbu 進步), ‘retreat step’ (tuibu 退步), ‘left-side gaze’ (zuogu 左顧), ‘right-side look’ (youpan 右盼), and ‘centre settle’ (zhongding 中定) the thirteen-powers theory supports a reasoned and practical methodology for managing the ‘middle range’ which demands a variety of tactile connection skills and specialized martial-kinetic forces or ‘energies’ (jìn 勁).

In this groundbreaking event we will explore the MIAM thirteen-powers theory using classical taijiquan form, push-hands, and application work to bring new life into ancient methods.
